OET vs IELTS: which English test should a doctor take?

Forum teamTeam· Oct 15, 2026
I'm an international medical graduate planning to work or train abroad, and I keep seeing both OET and IELTS listed as accepted English tests. I'm not sure which one suits a doctor better, or whether my target country or regulator cares. How should I decide before paying for preparation and an exam?

Short version: there is no universally better test. First check what your target regulator or program accepts, then choose between the accepted options based on your strengths. Main differences: - OET is built for healthcare professionals. The Listening and Reading tasks use medical settings, Writing is usually a referral or discharge-type letter, and Speaking is a role-play with a patient or carer. Many doctors find the content familiar, so they spend less effort on general topics. - IELTS Academic tests general academic English: describing a graph or diagram, writing an essay, and discussing everyday and abstract topics. It is not medical, but it is widely available and accepted for many purposes beyond medicine. - Scoring differs. OET reports sub-test scores and grades, while IELTS uses bands. Requirements are set per sub-test by each regulator, so a good overall result may not be enough. How to decide: 1. Open the official site of your regulator or program (for example GMC, AHPRA, ECFMG, or your national authority) and see which tests and minimum scores are accepted. Requirements and rules change, so don't rely on forum posts, including this one. 2. Check whether your pathway needs a specific test or the Medicine version of OET. Germany, for example, has its own language exam requirements, so check with the Approbationsbehörde. 3. If both are accepted, take a practice test or sample tasks for each. Official sample materials are on OET.com and ielts.org. 4. Consider logistics: test centres near you, available dates, format options, and cost. Fees vary by country and change, so check the official sites. 5. Look at validity periods and whether you can combine sub-test results from different sittings. Rules differ by regulator. If you are already comfortable with clinical communication, OET often feels more natural. If you want the most flexible certificate for other purposes, such as immigration, IELTS may be more useful. If you have taken either test, please share which you chose and why in the replies.
